POLISI LAB FAQs

What is POLISI LAB, really?

The heart of POLISI LAB is a series of classes on public policy and civil society engagement skills which will take place over 6 months. As a fringe to those classes, learners will be organised as groups for peer mentoring sessions and personal project sharing/discussions.

Who is it for?

We put together POLISI LAB specifically for ambitious youth/young professionals who have not yet had major opportunities to pursue their community/service project or research ambitions. Young Malaysians who may otherwise be especially occupied with their work commitments may benefit from the technical skills taught at POLISI LAB, project design and mentoring sessions, as well as the community of other passionate learners in the cohort.

How do I participate?

You can either take part by (i) opting to sit for the full Policymaker's Course, consisting of 7 compulsory modules, or (ii) opt to pix-and-mix modules. In either case, you must still complete our application form.

Why take the full Policymaker's Course?

Aside from benefiting from the full range of skills that POLISI LAB classes teach, only learners that take the Policymaker's Course can join the planned peer mentoring and project design discussions.

As another incentive, learners which complete the course will be entitled to use the 'Researcher' title at POLISI LAB to aid in their independent project and research initiatives; we would like to support your initiatives with institutional legitimacy this way.

Do I need to pay anything?

While classes are free, we ask that all learners contribute a small fee for each class to cover the venue costs for that particular session. We estimate that fees will be between RM10 to RM15 for each session. The precise cost of classes will be sent to you via e-mail once we are able to confirm your spot.

Tip: Don't forget to register!

Where and when will classes be held?

All classes will be held at Rumah Attap Library & Collective, the Zhongshan Building in Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur.

All classes will be held on Saturday mornings from 10am to 1pm on most weeks between mid-June and December 2019. Peer mentoring activities will take place occasionally after classes.

Must I attend all classes if I sign up?

All learners taking the Policymaker's Course must attend all classes under the core Modules. This is for the benefit of getting the best range of skills for advancing their own project and research aspirations. We advise that Policymaker's Course learners attend at least 80% of all compulsory classes. Where possible, do inform our team in advance about any classes you will need to skip.

Can I drop out after signing up?

Yes, of course. though we will naturally be sorry to see you go! We understand that new commitments may pop up over the next few months. Nonetheless, we hope you will still consider joining us as a 'pix-and-mix' learner!

Who are the organisers?

We are a group of 8 young professionals without any single unified political affiliation. In alphabetical order: Ashvinder Singh; Danesh Chacko; Faris Aiman; James Lai; Jia Min; Isabel Loke; Mark Chan; and Thanges Paleswaran.
